Hunter, aptly named, has developed a love for hunting over the last several years. It takes him year round to get plots ready, set up trail cameras, move deer-stands, blinds, practice with his bow, study the buck in his sights and wait. And wait. He spends a great deal of time waiting on just the right buck to get in shot range. He lets many pass by because he's waiting on the best one.
While home for Thanksgiving, he went out every morning way before sunrise to sit in his stand. He spends time with God in the quiet and in the wait. He'd tell us about how many does and bucks he had seen each morning. He'd watch their routines and habits. He'd describe the sunrise, each different, but all beautiful. Some mornings there would be fog, like the morning he shot 'Round two" and he'd describe the beauty of the woods. What he'd hear from God in the quietness. Late every afternoon, he'd go back. He'd sit and wait. Watch the sun set and be reminded again, God is faithful.
While hunting isn't my passion by a long shot, Hunter loves it. It's a sport to him and a provision. But, I learn a great deal from him as I watch him all year long. There are many spiritual lessons in this hunting hobby of his. I admire and am grateful for his patience and refusal to settle for less than. How often we settle for the immediate in thls life over the ultimate God has for us. Hunter doesn't quit or give in or give up. He doesn't grow weary, but reaps a harvest. While he is waiting, his waiting is not passive. It's active. He is watching and listening and his weapon is ready. As he waits in the quiet and in the dark, he sees God's faithfulness in the sunrise each morning. It pierces the darkness and brings to light what is hidden. He sees God as his provider and when he is obedient in the things he knows, God is faithful in the things of God.
